Does it matter where and how we view a film? How do our perceptions of films change when they are viewed in the cinema, or at home, or on a plane, or at uni…..or on a phone? What do you think?

Born in Wales and educated in London, Peter Greenaway trained as a painter for four years, and started making his own films in 1966. He now lives in Amsterdam.

He has continued to make cinema in a great variety of ways, which has also informed his curatorial work and the making of exhibitions and installations.

He has made 12 feature films and some 50 short-films and documentaries, been regularly nominated for the Film Festival Competitions of Cannes, Venice and Berlin, published books, written opera librettos, and collaborated with composers Michael Nyman, Glen Branca, Wim Mertens, Jean-Baptiste Barriere, Philip Glass, Louis Andriessen, Borut Krzisnik and David Lang.

His first narrative feature film, The Draughtsman¹s Contract, completed in 1982, received great critical acclaim and established him internationally as an original film maker, a reputation consolidated by the films, The Cook, the Thief, his Wife & her Lover and The Pillow-book, The Tulse Luper Suitcases, and most recently by Nightwatching.

Here is a really interesting interview with Peter Greenaway where he talks about using VJing as a way of delivering narrative based content and the death of film

Telling Tales September 1, 2009

Whilst in London for the Walking in My Mind exhibition I made a quick dash to the Victoria and Albert Museum to take in the Telling Tales exhibition.

“This exhibition explores the recent trend among European designers for unique or limited edition pieces that push the boundaries between art and design. It showcases furniture, lighting and ceramics, designed by a new generation of international designers, including Tord Boontje, Maarten Baas, Jurgen Bey and Studio Job, who are all inspired by the spirit of story-telling. Each tells a tale through their use of decorative devices, historical allusions or choice of materials, sharing common themes such as fantasy, parody and a concern with mortality.”

Walking in My Mind September 1, 2009

An exhibition I really enjoyed was Walking in My Mind at the Hayward Gallery.
“Walking in My Mind explores the inner workings of the artist’s imagination through immersive, large-scale installation art. Ten international artists transform the Hayward Gallery’s indoor galleries and outdoor sculpture terraces into a series of gigantic sculptural environments, each of which represents an individual mindscape. Interior worlds of emotions, thoughts, memories and dreams collide with exterior reality, blurring the boundaries between inner and outer space.”

Artists include:
Charles Avery, Thomas Hirschhorn, Yayoi Kusama, Bo Christian Larsson, Mark Manders, Yoshitomo Nara, Jason Rhoades, Pipilotti Rist, Chiharu Shiota and Keith Tyson.

I thought this was a really nicely curated exhibition that made excellent use of the Hayward space. At times it was difficult to relate the exhibition to the usual inner space of the gallery. The exhibition provoked many interesting problems about how an artist can portray the inner workings of the human mind and where ideas come from.

Banksey versus Bristol Museum September 1, 2009

Over the summer I went to Bristol to view the Banksey exhibition. It has received a lot of attention in the press and people have been queuing for up to 4 hours to get in.I must have been lucky as i only had to wait 40 minutes (great). I had mixed feelings about the exhibition, there were a lot of nice ideas in the work on display but afterwards I was left feeling fairly nonplussed by the exhibition and that the work was very superficial. I accept that a lot of people rate Banksey’s work though so here are a number of images from the exhibition.

Adobe Education Leaders Summer School September 1, 2009

At the end of July I was lucky enough to be invited to attend the Adobe Education Leaders Summer School in San Jose. The Summer School is held at the Adobe Headquarters and brings together 100 eduction leaders from around the world to share good practice, discuss new developments and feedback to Adobe on new and existing products.
The five days were extremely useful opening up many opportunities to meet Adobe executives and product developers and discuss new developments and improvements.

During the week I was able to attend many workshops and demonstrations of new products and see many innovative approaches to using Adobe Products. A number of new products were introduced and discussed. Adobe’s acquisition of Macromedia is now opening up many exciting possibilities for extending the Adobe product range.

An interesting new beta release is Flex Builder a new member of the Flash Family. Import compositions from Photoshop or Illustrator, group layers and drag and drop behavior to create interactivity. Download a beta version by clicking on the logo below.

I also saw a demo of an exciting new product, Adobe Story. “Adobe Story is a collaborative scriptwriting tool for film, broadcast, and rich media. Adobe Story enables the online pre-production workflow for those who want to collaborate and expand their ideas anytime, anywhere, with anyone.”
